Employment and the Islamic Holy Month

Overview The month of Ramadan inevitably results in changes to the daily routines of Muslim communities across the country, including the observation of fasting during the hours of daylight, fast-breaking at the end of the day, the dawn sahur meal and the religious activity of tarawih. However, even though this is a special month for Muslims, business still has to be conducted in a regular manner and, consequently, employees still have to perform their jobs accordingly. From the perspective of private employers, there are a number of specific legal employment issues that arise during the Holy Month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, such as the payment of the religious-holiday allowance (Tunjangan Hari Raya – “THR”) and the rearrangement of working hours for certain companies....
